Guided by our purpose and our values, we enable both high performance and purposeful action as we aim to re-imagine mining to improve people's lives"", delivering the metals and minerals that make modern life possible."As Principal Health & Hygiene you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Consult and lead on health and occupational hygiene matters related to the BU's operations.
  • Collaborate with line management to establish and maintain an integrated Health and Occupational Hygiene management system that follows the Total Health Strategy and focal areas.
  • Review Kumba Health policies regularly and recommend changes to ensure that Kumba keeps pace with internationally accepted best practices.
  • Provide expert guidance on Health and occupational hygiene matters to the Operating Units.
  • Maintain the Anglo American and Kumba Health standards and related documentation and ensure these are appropriately implemented throughout Kumba.
  • Advise on designing and implementing appropriate and relevant Health management systems at the Operating Units.
  • Ensure that Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Medicine are adequately resourced throughout the Operating Units and that these disciplines are appropriately integrated into Occupational Health management systems.
  • Guide occupational health risk management, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and control, emphasising long-term risk management in coordination with the manager: Safety and Risk.
  • Manage regular employee monitoring and medical surveillance procedures to prevent, identify and treat illness proactively.
  • Produce Occupational exposure histories and link Occupational Hygiene measurements to medical surveillance records via the system mandated by the BU or region.
  • Maintain a set of leading and lagging Occupational Health key performance indicators relevant to the Kumba Occupational Health risks and monitor the performance at the Operating Unit.
  • Drive and oversee the development of employee Health and Wellness programmes, including prevention, screening, diagnosis and management of chronic medical conditions and the HIV & TB programs.
  • Drive the Mental Health & Financial wellbeing strategies for Kumba
  • Drive and oversee the Fatigue Management program
  • Recognise and evaluate those conditions within the operating units and the corporate office that may arise in or from the workplace and may cause illness or adverse health effects to persons.
  • Design, coordinate, and manage high-level occupational hygiene programmes based on risk assessments and monitoring findings.
  • Manage budget & cost control, i.e. organise section's expenditure to ensure adequate cost controls/savings.
  • Conduct effective people management, including optimising human resources, maximising output delivery by section, and ensuring work ethics that allow workers to strive to improve their performance.
  • Build a competent workforce, ensuring all subordinates have performance contracts and respective discussions, and monitoring competence to suggest adequate employee development programs.
This role is in the Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) department at a Band 5 level reporting to Executive Head of SHE.QualificationsQualifications
  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Medical Doctor
  • Occupational Health Qualification
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council in South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Doctor
  • SA Drivers Licence
Experience
  • Substantial experience in health and hygiene, particularly in a managerial capacity, within the mining industry.
  • Expertise in managing health risks and promoting wellness.
  • Proficient in project management and SHE business process modelling.
  • Proficient in safety risk management.
  • Skilled in integrated risk management and assurance.
  • Capable of effectively reporting on performance.
  • Able to develop sustainable business practices.
  • Skilled in managing environmental risks, resources, and opportunities.
