Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer: Robotics and Control Systems

The Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University offers leading educational and research programmes in the fields of robotics and control systems. A full-time, permanent position has recently become available in the Departments in these fields and the Departments are therefore looking for excellent candidates to fill this position. In these fields the Departments have well-established research laboratories as well as teaching and engineering infrastructure. The position is a joint appointment at both Departments.
Duties:
Contributing towards the planning, administration and teaching of innovative, research-led taughtmodules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, specifically in the field of specialised control systems and ro-botics;
Supervising and assessing final year projects, research theses and dissertations at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the fields of robotics for mining and control systems;
Performing basic and/or applied research focused on relevant research areas within the robotics in mining research area;
Publishing high-quality research articles and reviews in international and local peer-reviewed academic journals, conferences and other appropriate forms of research output;
Disseminating research results to a wide audience by organising and participating in workshops, semi-nars and conferences;
Attracting significant additional funding for research contracts and grants from research councils, interna-tional commissions and other funding agencies, including government organisations, industry and chari-ties;
Attracting and developing a high-profile research team of research staff and postgraduate students, spe-cifically in the field of robotics in mining;
Contributing towards the excellence of the research culture of the Faculty and University;
Initiating short-, medium- and long-term capacity building initiatives and projects for the industry;
Collaborating with existing research partners within the Departments, and building contacts with other universities, industry and government organisations to promote research and development programmes in the robotics in mining fields at Stellenbosch University;
Performing supportive, administrative and representative roles within and outside the Departments.
Requirements:
An applicable Bachelors degree (BEng or BScEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as required by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
An appropriate Masters degree (typically MEng or MScEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering from a recognised academic university.
(For Senior Lecturer):
o An appropriate PhD in Engineering from an accredited national or international tertiary institution in the fields of control systems or robotics, with at least five years experience in at a tertiary education environment, OR at least eight years proven experience in industry in the fields of control systems, robotics, or mining.
(For Associate Professor):
o An appropriate PhD in Engineering from an accredited national or international tertiary institution with at least eight years experience at a tertiary education environment in the fields of control systems or robotics;
o Proven ability to conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed, international journals and conference proceedings in the fields of control systems or robotics.
(For Professor):
o An appropriate PhD in Engineering from an accredited national or international tertiary institution with at least ten years experience at a tertiary education environment in the fields of control systems or robotics;
o Proven ability to conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed, international journals and conference proceedings in the fields of control systems or robotics.
Registered as a professional engineer, or compliant with the criteria for registration as a professional en-gineer;
The ability to communicate clearly in at least English;
The ability to teach courses and modules as part of the typical undergraduate engineering programme as described in the duties above;
A solid knowledge of and experience in the field of control systems or robotics;
A strong academic track-record;
Good interpersonal and organisational skills.
Recommendations:
Previous tertiary teaching experience, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
A record in establishing or operating a research environment funded externally (such as by theindustry);
A proven record of the ability to obtain external funding for research.
