Job Description

A vacancy exists for a suitably qualified, experienced individual in the above


post. The individual will form part of a dynamic team, responsible for


undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision in Social Work. The


incumbent will form part of the Social Work Department within the School of


Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities.


Requirements for Professor



A PhD in Social Work. A valid registration with the South African Council for Social Service
Professions (SACSSP).
A candidate who satisfies the requirements for appointment, must
comply with the Fit and Proper policy as prescribed by the SACSSP,


before assumption of duty.
At least 10 subsidy-generating publications/ articles in SAPSE
accredited journals of which 5 should be within social work field.
A minimum of 8 years' experience of successful teaching at
undergraduate level, and completed Master's and doctoral supervision


within the social work field.
Potential to initiate and contribute to joint research projects. Good understanding of collaborative, ethical, innovative and effective
leadership style and commitment to higher education standards.
Commitment and capability to promote the Department's mission
internally as well as towards external University constituencies and


stakeholders.
A thorough understanding of the challenges facing the Higher Education
sector and Historically Black Universities (HBUs) in particular.

Requirements for Associate Professor



A PhD in Social Work. A valid registration with the South African Council for Social Service
Professions (SACSSP).
A candidate who satisfies the requirements for appointment, must
comply with the Fit and Proper policy as prescribed by the SACSSP,


before assumption of duty.
A minimum of 5 years' experience of successful teaching at
undergraduate level, and completed scholarly Master's supervision


within the social work field.
At least 8 subsidy generating publications/ articles in SAPSE accredited
journals of which 4 should be within social work field.
Potential to initiate research projects and contribute to joint research
projects.
Good understanding of collaborative, ethical, innovative and effective
leadership style and commitment to higher education standards.
Commitment and capability to promote the Department's mission
internally as well as towards external University constituencies and


stakeholders.
Understanding the challenges facing the Higher Education sector and
Historically Black Universities (HBUs) in particular.

Duties for Professor/ Associate Professor



Teaching and Learning

: Active participation in support of student and
staff mentorship programmes, involvement in teaching all modules,


design and curriculum development, updating material i.r.o. national and


international trends, evaluation of lectures, lecturers and course material,


maintains discussion class, identifies at risk students and facilitates


additional assistance, and undertakes discipline related research

Research

: Supervise Master's and Doctoral students, involvement in
research processes, oversee and participate in project teams working on


research projects, participation in conferences, produce published


articles/books/chapters in books (measurable research outputs)

Academic citizenship

: Involvement in community engagement,

Governance

: With a focus on quality assurance, prepare module
outlines and study guides, organise module files, deliver to deadlines,


records of all academic activities, participate in departmental, school


committees.
Undergo regular performance appraisal assessments.
