These programmes are designed to encourage students to develop their sociological imagination, learn and apply sociological knowledge towards addressing various social issues in contemporary South Africa and further afield. Teaching in the Department of Sociology is informed by research as the academics are experts in their respective fields of research and scholarship.The Department is expanding its academic and research programmes and hence we seek to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to serve in the position of professor or associate in sociology.The successful candidate for the position will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
graduate and postgraduate levels in sociology theories and research methodologies, especially quantitative or mixed methods research. * Conduct research and publish in reputable scholarly outlets.

  • Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision.
  • Provide academic leadership and administration.
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment.
  • Evidence of integration of community engagement.
Minimum RequirementsMinimum Requirements: Professor
  • Demonstrated experience (at least ten [10] years) in facilitating learning and teaching in higher education.
  • A record of quality peer reviewed publications - at least 18 articles in accredited journals and/or books or chapters in books published by reputable presses, or equivalent recognised outputs.
  • A record of academic conference presentations both locally and internationally.
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision, including graduated Master's and PhD students.
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and definite international presence in his/her/their field of research.
  • Evidence of ability to obtain research grants.
  • Recommendation:
  • An NRF rating or a demonstrated potential to obtain a rating.
Minimum Requirements: Associate ProfessorAssociate Professor: The successful applicant must have a PhD in Sociology as well as a strong record of publications, research, teaching, supervision and the running of research projects at university level. Experience in academic leadership will serve as a recommendation.
  • PhD in Sociology.
  • Demonstrated experience (at least eight [8] years) in facilitating learning and teaching in higher education.
  • A record of quality peer reviewed publications - at least 15 articles in accredited journals and/or books or chapters in books published by reputable presses, or equivalent recognised outputs.
  • A record of academic conference presentations both locally and internationally.
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision, including graduated Master's and preferably PhD students.
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and definite international presence in his/her/their field of research.
  • Evidence of the integration of community engagement for societal impact with learning and teaching and/or research.
