The University is guided by the vision of building An international university of choice, anchored in Africa and the global south, dynamically shaping a sustainable future".Job descriptionThe University of Johannesburg is actively recruiting for a Professor in the Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management in the Human Resource Management Programme.The Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management, situated in the College of Business and Economics, School of Management has a comprehensive offering at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, both in traditional university qualifications and professional development qualifications. Our comprehensive offering comprises of two main programmes: Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Management (HRM). All our postgraduate programmes have a strong research component. Our aim is to develop outstanding People Professionals, up to the critical leadership task of making their organisations and people future fit as they move into a radically different future.:A full professor with behavioural science (Human Resource Management / Industrial Psychology) as an academic underpinning, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The person must be able to carry out duties to promote research in human resource management and to be globally recognised as pioneers in the field of Industrial Psychology and Human Resources Management and create a visible, unique, academic footprint especially in Africa. This ideal candidate must be a thought leader in their research niche, related to human resource management.Duties:The incumbent will be expected to be responsible for:

  • Teaching and learning: Delivering engaging and informative lectures [contact and distance] for undergraduate and postgraduate students on various Human Resource Management modules, establishing recognised expertise and authority in the discipline. Designing and implementing comprehensive assessments providing accurate and timely grading and offering constructive feedback to support student development. Evidence of discipline-related external assessment and recognition as a leading expert in Human Resource Management.
  • Research: Engaging in extensive national/international research within the broad fields of Human Resource Management, contributing to the development of new knowledge and advancements in the discipline. Publishing frequently cited research results in scientific peer reviewed journals. Presenting research results at national and international conferences and NRF rating (or rating based on an equivalent peer review mechanism) as an established researcher (C2 or better) is strongly recommended. Evidence of national/international reputation as an established and distinguished researcher in Human Resource Management, including an appropriately high number of peer citations. Evidence of a considerable record of successful supervision of M and D candidates.
  • Leadership, Administration, Enhancement of Discipline: Recognised academic leader. Evidence of significant participation and contribution towards meeting institutional goals and objectives. Evidence of substantial contribution to faculty and institutional roles, committees, and initiatives. Evident leadership in discipline and/or professional associations. Evidence of community engagement. Active involvement in departmental and college-level committees, sharing expertise and contributing to the decision-making process.
  • Professional Partnerships: Cultivating and nurturing professional relationships with industry partners to facilitate collaboration, internships, and research opportunities for students and the department. Engaging in community activities.
  • Funding and Grants: Attract sources of funding and grants at a department and college level.
Minimum requirements
  • A relevant Doctoral degree in Human Resource Management / Industrial Psychology or its associated specialised fields.
  • Minimum eight years' of working experience in the Higher Education environment.
  • Excellent teaching skills and extensive knowledge in the field of Human Resource Management.
  • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching, e.g., teaching evaluations or relevant portfolio.
  • A proven record of excellence, with publications in reputable DHET accredited journals and conference proceedings.
  • Proven track record of graduated Masters and Doctoral students.
  • Knowledge of the online learning environment and ability to use and lecture on an online learner management system, e.g., Blackboard, Moodle.

  • NRF rating (or rating based on an equivalent peer review mechanism) as an established researcher (C2 or better) is strongly recommended.
  • Proven experience in delivering keynote addresses at national scholarly conferences.
  • Served as a member of an international scholarly society OR an international committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.
  • Evidence of attraction of funds and recipient of grants
  • Knowledge of the online learning environment
  • Previous exposure to management of portfolios within a higher education environment
  • Evidence of visibility within the academic community
  • Affiliated and registered with the South African Board for People Practices / Registration with the HPCSA as Industrial Psychologist
