Job Summary:The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Trauma Unit provides direct patient care to trauma patients in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment. The role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, and the ability to make quick decisions to stabilize patients in critical conditions. RNs in this position collaborate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver emergency care and manage trauma patients from initial assessment through treatment and recovery.Key Responsibilities:Trauma Care:

  • Provide immediate, high-quality nursing care to trauma patients, including those with life-threatening injuries.
  • Perform initial assessments and prioritize care based on patient condition using the triage system.
  • Monitor and manage patientsxe2x80x99 vital signs, administer medications, and provide treatments per protocols.
  • Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement care plans.
Clinical Skills:
  • Perform advanced trauma life support (ATLS) procedures under supervision or guidance, including managing airways, IV lines, and other life-saving techniques.
  • Assist with trauma-related surgeries and interventions, ensuring the sterile environment is maintained.
  • Document patient care, medical history, procedures, and other important details in Electronic Health Records (EHR).
Patient Advocacy:
  • Ensure patients and their families are well-informed about the care process, treatment options, and expected outcomes.
  • Provide emotional support and comfort to patients and their families during traumatic events.
Patient Monitoring & Evaluation:
  • Continuously monitor trauma patients for changes in condition, and promptly inform the physician or trauma team of any significant changes.
  • Update patient charts and records, ensuring accurate documentation of care provided.
  • Identify potential complications or risks associated with trauma injuries and take immediate action.
Collaboration & Teamwork:
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, including physicians, trauma surgeons, anesthetists, radiologists, and social workers, to deliver comprehensive care.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
  • Work closely with emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics to manage pre-hospital care and transport.
Safety & Compliance:
  • Follow hospital and departmental protocols, ensuring compliance with healthcare laws, including HIPAA and patient safety standards.
  • Assist with the maintenance of trauma equipment and ensure the appropriate stock of necessary supplies.
  • Participate in regular safety drills, emergency response training, and continuing education related to trauma care.
Education & Training:
  • Provide education and guidance to new nurses, students, or trainees in trauma care procedures and protocols.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training in trauma nursing.
Qualifications: Education & Certification:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with current licensure in [South Africa].
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred, or equivalent.
  • Certification in Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) or Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) required.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a registered nurse in a trauma or emergency setting.
  • Experience working in Level 1 or Level 2 Trauma Centers is a plus.
  • Proven ability to manage high-stress, high-acuity patient care situations.
Skills & Abilities:
  • Critical thinking and clinical judgment to make swift decisions in trauma situations.
  • Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with medical teams, patients, and families.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially in documenting patient care and progress.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care, particularly in traumatic situations.
  • Physical stamina to handle the demands of trauma nursing, including long shifts and lifting.
