Resource Modelling Geologist

Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Job Description

Company DescriptionWe have an exciting position for a Resource Modelling Geologist who will be instrumental in three-dimensional tectono-stratigraphic modelling of deposits to enable subsequent project evaluation and mine planning to extract the ore as defined in the models in an economic or feasible manner.Be part of the team. The team that makes it happen.Guided by our purpose and our values, we enable both high performance and purposeful action as we aim to re-imagine mining to improve people's lives", delivering the metals and minerals that make modern life possible.Kumba Iron OreWe produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects - exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.Guided by our purpose and our values, we enable both high performance and purposeful action as we aim to re-imagine mining to improve people's lives", delivering the metals and minerals that make modern life possible. As Resource Modelling Geologist you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Validate borehole data in terms of representivity of borehole logs using relevant QA/QC monitoring data as generated by the Borehole Database Manager/Exploration Geologist/Mining Geologist. Identify boreholes not suitable for sampling considering all aspects of the sampling value chain.
  • Keep record of borehole data validation to ensure that only representative borehole data is passed on for resource estimation purposes.
  • Ensure that site-specific ore-body (deposit) knowledge is obtained of the deposit to be modelled before modelling commences, i.e. interact with the relevant on-site Exploration/Mining Geologists to understand the ore genesis and tectono-stratigraphic breakdown of the deposit.
  • Consider aspects critical for safe and feasible mining which may require sub-domaining of ore/waste domains i.e. geotechnical (for example weathering), mining (for example carbonaceous shale which holds safety risk for blasting and beneficiation (ore textures which influence beneficiation potential of ore) etc.
  • Conduct solid modelling according to established site-specific methods, standards, and protocols.
  • Build solids models in a manner which always honour the ore genesis, the borehole data and the local stratigraphy as well as tectonic regime.
  • Build solids models using a software workflow setup which is repeatable and will allow for subsequent update of the solids model by another Resource Modelling geologist not familiar with the deposit.
  • Validate solids models to ensure that borehole data is honoured 100%, considering site-specific modelling resolution rules
  • Run validations to ensure that solids model domains validate, considering site-specific modelling resolution rules
  • Compile a handover report which details the model update using the existing Kumba template, to enable peers to understand all changes associated with the model update.
  • Meetings with stakeholders to inform them of model outcome and future modelling input requirements.
  • Participate in stakeholder engagements relevant to the discipline and consistently meet sustainability expectations.
  • Support developing and implementing a purpose-led, high-performing culture within the team aligned with company values of inclusivity and diversity.
This role is in Geosciences at a Band 6 level reporting to the Specialist Resource Modelling Geologist.Qualifications
  • Grade 12
  • B.Sc. Geology Honors
  • SACNASP preferred
  • SA Drivers Licence
Experience
  • Previous Exploration and/or Mining Geology of 6 to 8 years is required as a minimum (preferably specific to iron ore) OR at least 3 years implicit solids modelling experience.
  • Tectono-stratigraphy: Knowledge of tectono-stratigraphy, emphasising how it impacts resource estimation (site specific orebody knowledge is preferred).
  • Resource Modelling Software: Understanding of software used for resource modelling (e.g., Leapfrog and Surpac) is a minimum requirement, with application thereof to independently produce a deposit solids model preferred.
  • Mining and Extraction Processes: Basic understanding of mining methods and how resource models are used in mine planning.
  • Resource Model Development: Ability to create, update, and validate resource models, integrating Exploration and Ore Control data.
  • Data Management: Proficient in managing large datasets, ensuring data integrity and consistency throughout the modelling process.
  • Technical Reporting: Ability to produce detailed technical reports and relevant inserts for resource statements
  • Clearly documenting the modelling process.
