Job Description


Africas Largest edible oil manufacturer requires a Risk & Safety Officer to ensure the compliance, implementation, monitoring, maintenance and evaluation of the FMCG organisation. Located in the Western Cape, national travel required.Direct reports include the SHEQ Officer, Junior Safety Officer, H&S Administrator. Reporting to the Engineering Manager: Maintenance (GMR2.1)Requirements:

  • SAMTRAC / NEBOSH / Degree / Diploma in OHS Field
  • Min 5 Years FMCG Environment/ factory set up
  • Registered SAIOSH
  • Registered SACPCM
  • Emergency medical experience - registered with Health Professional Council of SA (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of the OHS Oct
  • Knowledge and understanding of the OHSA & Regulations, NFPA 36, SANS 10400 (Fire Extinguishers), SANS 10139 (Fire Detection)
Duties include
  • Maintain the Health and Safety Management Systems for all production sites
  • Facilitate and perform Health, Safety and Environmental risk identification assessments, evaluation & development of safe work procedures with department managers
  • Facilitate and review investigations and recording of all accidents / incidents / near misses and ensure accurate reporting and mitigating measures are implemented
  • Ensure Safety Committee Meetings are held regularly as per OHSA requirements for all plants / sites
  • Ensure Health & Safety Representatives conduct monthly inspections and submit required reports for feedback to management
  • Ensure external contractors adhere to the Construction Regulation requirements as well as any company specific specifications
  • Audit all Contractors as per audit schedule, construction contractors every 30 days.
  • Ensure continuous Health & Safety training of all employees for all plants and sites on topics pertaining to safe work procedures and practices
  • Effective management of plants and sites security and external security service providers to comply with security requirements set out as well as Food Safety requirements (Threat Assessment and Critical Control Points / Food Safety System Certification)
  • Manage and maintain the onsite medical clinic and facility, equipment and medical consumable stock, including calibration of alcohol Breathalyzer, all clinic equipment and health and safety department equipment
  • Ensure all staff pre-employment, annual / periodical and exit medicals are carried out for compliance with OHSA and food safety requirements
  • Responsible for all staff medical records and the safekeeping thereof in the onsite clinic
  • Handling all Department of Employment and Labour related visits and reporting
  • Ensure all plants and sites fire detection and fire suppression systems, including fire extinguishers, hose reels and fire hydrants are functional, compliant and certified as per SANS requirements
  • Ensure all manufacturing plants and sites steam generators, pressure vessels, forklifts, lifting gear and mobile cranes are compliant and certified as per respective requirements of the OHSA Regulations
  • Report back to management to on deviations identified and required actions to be taken on all plant areas
  • Ensure Health and Safety Reports and plant statistics are submitted to management / business analysis department on a regular basis for statistical records
  • Ensure all construction and installation processes of systems and new projects adhere to Health & Safety and Environmental standards, during and after the completion of projects
  • Ensure management is up to date with current legislative requirements, provide guidance on compliance and system implementation
  • Responsible for all plants Site Safety induction programs for all employees, contractors and visitors
  • Participate in safety forums created by the company such as safety meetings and safety talks
  • Follow-up on any activities assigned through safety meetings / committees / representatives / management
  • Report all safety incidents to the relevant people
  • Attend safety education and refresher programmes
  • Comply with safety policies and procedures
  • Distribute safety information as and when required
  • Wear protective clothing where necessary
  • Ensure overall compliance to relevant procedures and policies
  • Ensure that all team members have clearly defined job profiles
  • Regular goal review completed to assess achievement of results
  • Support, coaching and mentoring is continuously provided to ensure that objectives are met
  • Ensure that development plans are in place for each employee
  • Appropriate allocation of resources to meet operational demands
  • Ensure that events/activities taking place in the team are effectively communicated within team
  • Ensure adequate succession planning to meet ongoing and anticipated business requirements
