Provide South African Sign Language interpreting for Deaf staff and students as determined by academic schedules and departments in accordance with the professional and personal needs of Deaf staff and students.
Provide language support (e.g., assisting with written communication and interpreting of documents) in accordance with the needs of Deaf staff and students.
Interpret for conferences, seminars, and workshops, as required.
Participate in community service activities by interpreting to the broader Deaf community as capacity allows.
Assist in the implementation of support systems for Deaf staff members and students.
Assist in recording all forms of support provided according to the requirements of the South African Sign Language interpreting schedule.
Assist with administrative tasks related to activities within the South African Sign Language interpreter portfolio.
Assist with collecting and recording new/existing signs for educational and subject-specific terminology.
Assist with informing Deaf and hearing clients regarding the role of the South African Sign Language interpreter.
Assist with the mentoring and training of South African Sign Language interpreters working within Interpreting Services.
Assist with quality assurance practices regarding South African Sign Language interpreting within the South African Sign Language Portfolio.
Adhere to the SATI Code of Conduct for South African Sign Language interpreters as well as the Best Practice document developed by the South African Sign Language Portfolio.
Take responsibility for personal development by staying up to date with the most recent research in the field of South African Sign Language interpreting.
Participate in activities within the South African Sign Language Portfolio.
Report to the head of interpreting services.
Liaise with Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients.
Develop and maintain networks with other South African Sign Language interpreters, organisations, and tertiary institutions relating to South African Sign Language interpreting.
Deliver feedback to peers.
Assist with promoting South African Sign Language at the UFS.
Attend staff development and South African Sign Language courses/workshops.Inherent requirements:
A relevant bachelors degree on NQF Level 7 in South African Sign Language.
A minimum of two (2) years of interpreting experience, of which 1 year must be in an educational Interpreting, preferably in higher education.
A minimum of 2 years experience in team interpreting.
Excellent communication skills in South African Sign Language.
A very good understanding of spoken and written English and another official South African language (excluding South African Sign Language).Recommendations:
Postgraduate Diploma/ honours degree on NQF Level 8 in South African Sign Language.
A basic understanding of the tertiary environment and structures.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
A proven ability to work independently, manage one's own workload, and adhere to strict schedules.
The ability to adapt to a wide range of South African Sign Language dialects and signing preferences of users.
Good standing in the Deaf community.
Flexibility in terms of working hours.Required competencies:
