Job Purpose
The successful candidate will teach Mathematics modules and supervise student projects up to the Postgraduate Diploma level in Mathematical Sciences, will contribute to curriculum development in Mathematical Sciences (especially post-Diploma qualifications), while providing support to the Department in pursuit of its objectives in teaching and learning, work integrated learning, service learning, and research.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
A doctoral degree in Applied Mathematics or a doctoral degree in Mathematics with a demonstrable focus on Applied Mathematics
At least 4 years' relevant working experience, which must include two years teaching experience in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics at the Higher Education level
Demonstrable skills and experience in Data Science (data cleaning and data analysis) in a widely used software or language such as Python, R, or SAS
Research and postgraduate supervision commensurate with Institutional requirements
Experience in curriculum development
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
Teach Mathematics and related modules up to the Postgrad Diploma level in Mathematical Sciences
Supervise student projects up to the Postgraduate Diploma level in Mathematical Sciences
Monitor and assess Work Integrated Learning
Develop innovative teaching and learning methods and materials for the subjects being taught (e.g., lecture notes, tutorials, online content)
Perform appropriate academic and administrative duties in the Department
Participate in curriculum development, particularly at post-Diploma level and higher
Participate in research projects and produce DHET-accredited publications
Participate in the Quality Assurance activities of the Department
Assist with marketing and student recruitment activities
Perform other functions as may be assigned by the Head of Department
Competencies
Proficiency in at least one Data Science programming language such as Python, R, or SAS
Proficiency with at least one Mathematics software package such as MATLAB
Strong oral and written communication skills
Organisational and planning skills
General computer skills (MS Office, Internet, email)
Adaptability and willingness to innovate
Skills in a code-based document preparation system (e.g. LaTeX)
Strong student focus
Administrative skills
Research and academic writing skills
Proficiency in English
