Collaborative research activities take place within six research frameworks, namely Religion, Ethics and Social Transformation; Religion and Gender; Religion and Development; Ecumenical Theology and Spirituality in Africa; Christian Ecotheology; and Biblical Hermeneutics and Rhetoric. The approach followed is thoroughly ecumenical and deeply rooted in the South African and broader African contexts.The Department seeks to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced applicant to strengthen its teaching, research, and supervision activities particularly in the areas of Practical Theology and Ethics.Key performance areas for Senior Lecturer/Lecturer

  • Teaching postgraduate and undergraduate students
  • Supervision of Honours and Master's students (Lecturer) and Supervision of Honours, Master's and PhD students (Senior Lecturer)
  • Initiating research projects and producing peer reviewed research outputs
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment
  • Participate in departmental and faculty committees
  • Coordinate research seminars and public lectures
  • Conduct academic duties at departmental level, e.g. module/course co-ordination
  • Integration of community engagement and outreach
Minimum RequirementsSenior Lecturer:
  • A Doctoral degree in Practical Theology
  • Expertise in one or more areas in the field of Practical Theology (noticeably Pastoral Theology, Pastoral Care and Counselling, Christian/Religious Education, Homiletics, Christian ministry and Leadership, Congregational Studies)
  • At least 4 publications in accredited journals or equivalent recognised outputs
  • Evidence of successful Master's supervision (at least 2 successfully completed)
  • Conference papers delivered
  • At least 3 years' tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level
Lecturer:
  • Master's degree in Practical Theology
  • Expertise in one or more areas in the field of Practical Theology (noticeably Pastoral Theology, Pastoral Care and Counselling, Christian/Religious Education, Homiletics, Christian ministry and Leadership, Congregational Studies)
  • At least 1 publication in an accredited journal or an equivalent recognised output
  • Evidence of innovative learning and teaching practice at undergraduate level
Added Advantages
  • A PhD or near completion of a PhD
  • A record of substantial ministerial experience (and not only "expertise") in the (South African) context
  • Versatility in the field of Practical Theology in terms of Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Care and Counselling
  • Evidence of a broader academic versatility, particularly in the field of social ethics
