To apply specialised knowledge to conduct bioinformatics analysis for respiratory and meningitis pathogens in both surveillance and research activities in line with the strategic objectives of the centre, in order to improve knowledge and provide conceptual thinking and understanding of health related issues
Location:
Centre for Respiratory Diseases and Meningitis, NICD, Sandringham - Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
Perform advanced bioinformatics analysis and interpretation on data produced from next generation sequencing as well as develop, improve, modify and operate data analysis pipelines
Design, conduct and publish relevant NGS research for respiratory and meningitis pathogens (bacterial) of public health importance
Contribute to research and funding applications in the area of NGS data analysis
Generate data analysis reports and perform custom analysis
Manage and maintain high quality sequence data and metadata
Participate in training staff/students/collaborators to build bioinformatics capacity in Africa
Manage bioinformatics projects to ensure objectives of ongoing studies are achieved
Contribute to total quality management of genomic data systems to ensure accurate and reliable results
Required minimum education and training:
Master's Degree in Bioinformatics or relevant medical science field
Required minimum work experience:
Minimum 3 years' experience in a public/surveillance environment working with bacterial genomes and sequencing data analysis, with evidence of leading initiatives/projects
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
Experience with the relevant sequence analysis tools/best practices would be advantageous
Background or experience in molecular biology or microbiology would be advantageous
Strong bioinformatics analysis and scripting experience including proficiency with scripting languages
Should possess scientific writing
Should possess data management and quality control skills
Should be able to work as a part of a multidisciplinary team including international collaborators
Should be computer literate and possess communication skills (verbal and written)
Should be able to work under pressure, while paying attention to detail and adhering to set timelines
Should be able to work flexible hours if the need arises (including public holidays and weekends)
