To conceptualize, design and manage research projects and for scientific reporting of results

Key performance areas:Research, teaching and training
To perform ethical and relevant research (basic and applied) that will provide new information on human diseases and promote the goal of becoming a world class research organisation
To apply specialised knowledge (molecular) and provide interpretation of results so that appropriate treatment or control methods can be implemented to diagnose, treat and prevent haematologic diseases
To evaluate and implement appropriate tests relevant to the activities of the unit including assay design, laboratory testing, data entry, data management, data cleaning, data analysis and report-writing/publishing in scientific journals
To improve existing laboratory tests and expand the test repertoire in order to enhance the provision of research services
To contribute to the teaching of students, health professionals, and technical staff research skills to develop research capacity
To write scientific reports and papers for submission to scientific, peer-reviewed journals and congresses in order to disseminate new research findings
To liaise with research collaborators and research supervisors on project implementation, both nationally and internationally in order to stimulate debate and ensure that the research meets high standards
Quality assurance and control
Complete quality control as per study specific protocol/SOP with internal quality control in conjunction with relevant staff
Perform internal audits as required
Monitoring of equipment and temperature charts daily, as required
Complete routine equipment maintenance, calibrate the laboratory equipment as required for the operation of that particular equipment
Run various quality control procedures as defined by the assay protocol or SOP
Management and storage of bioharzadous waste and toxic materials as and when required in the safety manual
Laboratory administration
Develop and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the study, new experimental protocols and equipment
Manage the logistical shipping process of biological substances from the hospital to the laboratory
Assist with stocktaking and ordering of consumables and reagents as required
Demonstrate cost consciousness and assist in meeting budgetary targets
Customer service
Ensure all customer interaction (both internal and external customers) is of the highest professional level
Build and maintain authentic relationships with all stakeholders, ensuring that all interactions are professional
Required minimum education and training:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Required minimum work experience:
Minimum of 2 years experience in a molecular laboratory
Professional body registration:
HPCSA registration is essential
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
Policy translation or diagnostic improvement knowledge would be advantageous
Basic knowledge of the haematology discipline would be advantageous
Knowledge of quality control in the laboratory would be advantageous
Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice would be advantageous
knowledge of appropriate research methodology and method validation
Knowledge of writing research publications and new research technologies
Knowledge of grant application processes and research ethics
