We are seeking unique people who believe in fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.We're on the lookout for a Senior Research Officer - Mensuration, Carbon and sustainability reporting based at Shaw Research Centre to enhance and refine effective yield estimation, yield prediction and yield optimisation capability through the maintenance and further development of growth and yield processes and models, as well as the maintenance of the growth and yield system and key datasets. Support the development and manage corporate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory projects as well as the sustainability reporting process through data collection and quality assurance and prepare submittals to carbon transparency reporting and scoring platforms, such as SAGERS, CDP, SBTi etc. Research and identify knowledge gaps to improve reporting accuracy and identify opportunities for direct and indirect emissions reductions.As a Senior Research Officer - Mensuration, Carbon and sustainability reporting, you will be responsible for:

  • Maintain existing growth models for all tree species and varieties grown by Sappi and make sure they are as accurate as possible using statistical analysis to prevent errors in growing stock estimation.
  • Develop new growth models as necessary by means of statistical analysis and relevant growth modelling processes for accurate growing stock measurement.
  • Document the process used and results obtained by publishing scientific and/or technical reports for future reference.
  • Drive industry collaboration by representing Sappi on relevant growth and yield technical committees to access external expertise and data.
  • Monitor Sappi growing stock condition through analysis of historic measurement information to identify and explain changes and trends in growth over time development and implementation of such technologies at an operational level.
  • Advise on effects of climatic factors over time on growth, by researching and publishing recommendations for potential operational implementation.
  • Ensure that accurate growing stock data is obtained by implementing and driving relevant measurement programs from which models can be developed and maintained.
  • Manage the permanent sample plot (PSP) program of Sappi Forests by determining plot locations to ensure good representation of growing stock and driving the measurement program.
  • Manage and acquire stem volume and taper data from internal and external measurement trial plots for the development of stem form models.
  • Manage and acquire spacing trial data from internal and external measurement trial plots for the development of spacing and mortality models
  • Support the sustainability reporting process through data collection and quality assurance and prepare submittals to carbon transparency reporting and scoring platforms, such as the CDP.
What are we looking for?
  • A relevant MSc degree in forestry, biometry, statistics or related
  • At least three years relevant experience
  • Experience with statistical modelling/biometry is essential
  • Experience with current statistical packages like SAS, R or Python is essential.
  • Experience working in carbon emissions accounting and reporting frameworks (voluntary or regulatory) such as the GHG Protocol Corporate, Scope 2 and Scope 3 Supply Chain Standards, CDP, ISO, etc. and/or Life Cycle Assessments is essential.
  • GIS and database experience will be advantageous
  • Driver's license and ability to drive
