This role requires a deep understanding of power system protection principles, relay settings, coordination studies, and fault analysis. The Senior System Engineer collaborates closely with design engineers, project managers, and field technicians to ensure the reliability and safety of power distribution systems. Additionally, effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills are essential for success in this role.Responsibilities of the Rolexc2xb7 Substation Protection scheme design - interpreting and translating customer requirements into a complete system as well as applying innovative approaches i.t.o products, technology and people.xc2xb7 Design protection schemes for electrical substations, transmission lines, and distribution networks. This includes specifying relay types, coordination settings, and communication protocols such as IEC61850.xc2xb7 Develop relay settings for various protection devices such as overcurrent relays, distance relays, differential relays, and transformer protection relays. Ensure coordination between different protection elements to minimize system downtime during faults.xc2xb7 Perform fault analysis studies to identify potential system vulnerabilities and recommend corrective actions. Utilize simulation software to model power system behavior under different fault conditions.xc2xb7 Implementing projects within time, cost and quality parameters.xc2xb7 Conduct coordination studies to optimize protection settings and ensure selective tripping of protection devices. Coordinate with neighboring utilities to maintain system stability during transient and permanent faults.xc2xb7 Oversee the commissioning and testing of protection systems during new installations or system upgrades. Develop testing procedures and perform acceptance testing to validate protection relay performance.xc2xb7 Documentation and Standards Compliance: Prepare technical documentation including protection relay settings, coordination studies, and equipment specifications. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements such as SABS and IEC.xc2xb7 Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Provide technical support for troubleshooting protection system issues and resolving relay misoperations.xc2xb7 Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians on protection system principles, relay coordination techniques, and best practices.xc2xb7 Providing customer support: the system engineer is required to perform post-fault investigations as required by the customer.
