Purpose of this role:





The primary purpose of a Shift Mechanical Fitter is to ensure the proper functioning and longevity of mechanical systems and machinery. Their role is crucial in maintaining the efficiency, safety, and reliability of equipment across various industries.


Key Accountabilities:





Installation and Assembly:

Mechanical fitters install and assemble machinery and mechanical systems, ensuring that all components are correctly aligned and securely fitted according to technical specifications and blueprints.

Maintenance and Repair:

They conduct routine maintenance and emergency repairs on machinery and equipment. This involves diagnosing issues, replacing or repairing faulty parts, and ensuring that machinery operates smoothly and efficiently.

Modification and Fabrication:

Mechanical fitters may need to modify existing equipment or fabricate new parts to improve performance or to meet specific operational requirements. This often involves skills in machining, welding, and other fabrication techniques.

Testing and Commissioning: Conduct tests and commission mechanical equipment, ensuring proper operation safety, and performance.



Safety and Compliance:

Ensuring that all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations and industry standards is crucial. Mechanical fitters must follow safety protocols, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensure that all machinery operates within safe parameters.


Completion of an apprentice program and passed Trade test as a Fitter or a Fitter & Turner is essential. Grade 12/Matric with Maths/Maths Lit and English 3-5 years working experience in mechanical or similar role is essential. Experience in working with hydraulics and pneumatics is essential. Must have working knowledge of compressors, pumps, fans, bearings & gearboxes. Experienced in working at heights and in restricted spaces to access machinery and equipment components. Must be able to move, lift or carry heavy objects or materials. Strong fault-finding ability and quick response to complex mechanical problems. Frequent standing and/or walking is essential. Work safely and produce quality work (Work is frequently performed in high places and near conveyors and there is frequent exposure to hot, wet, and humid conditions Must be able to work overtime, shifts, weekends, and public holidays. Observe and adhere to Health and Safety rules.
