Silviculture Forester
and play a key role in managing sustainable forestry operations. We're seeking a dynamic individual with at least
five (5) years of experience
in silviculture to lead and implement forestry management practices aligned with our strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Continuous Tasks:
Oversee weeding and burning programmes to support forest health and regeneration.
Implement updates to the Annual Plan of Operations (APO), ensuring all changes are effectively managed.
Establish and confirm seedling requirements for forestry operations.
Conduct safety audits and implement corrective actions to ensure the well-being of all staff
Monthly Tasks:
Oversee the implementation of the APO.
Manage fire protection protocols, particularly during fire season.
Perform sanity checks on enumeration data for accuracy (species, stocking, etc.).
Plan and execute first-party audits, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.
Annual Tasks:
Contribute to the preparation of the APO and Resource Balancing Plan.
Perform annual data integrity audits on all compartments, ensuring all areas, species, age, stocking, and damage are accurately recorded.
Longer-Term Responsibilities:
Implement the 5-year plan as per contract specifications, ensuring all silvicultural operations are carried out efficiently and effectively.
Key Performance Areas:
Planning Process:
Contribute to the preparation of operational plans (daily, monthly, and yearly). Ensure alignment with silvicultural objectives and sustainability targets.
Work closely with the Mondi Forester to align compartment planning with silviculture goals.
Delivery Against Contractual Targets:
Ensure that all silvicultural operations (planting, weeding, fire protection) are conducted according to the APO.
Monitor planting efforts and ensure spacing and stocking standards are maintained for optimal growth.
Control of Assigned Processes:
Manage performance and costings to ensure operations are completed within budget and on schedule.
Conduct in-field assessments and audits to ensure the quality of silviculture work.
Attend safety meetings and enforce safety regulations.
Utilise Essential Skills and Knowledge:
Apply technical knowledge of silviculture, fire management, and environmental standards to maintain sustainable forestry practices.
Strong leadership, planning, and time management skills to effectively manage silvicultural operations.
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in managing teams, resolving disputes, and engaging with stakeholders.
Qualifications & Experience Required:
Education (Minimum Necessary to Perform Job): Grade 12.
Post School (Professional/Technical/Academic): Forestry/Business/Agriculture Diploma--essential.
Adv. Diploma. or B.Sc. Forestry/Agriculture--desirable.
Experience: A minimum of
5 years
' experience in
silviculture
or a related field, with a proven track record of forestry management and silvicultural practice.
Technical Skills:
In-depth knowledge of silviculture techniques, fire management, and relevant forestry regulations.
Leadership Skills:
Proven ability to lead teams.
Safety Management:
Experience in conducting safety audits and ensuring compliance with safety standards in forestry operations.
Business Acumen:
Strong understanding of cost management, resource allocation, and contract negotiations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Silviculture
Forester
will oversee all silviculture operations within their assigned areas, ensuring that all operations meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency.
