We offer a highly diverse, professional and supportive environment with opportunities for development and growth.Description:The African Health Research Institute (AHRI) has an exciting opportunity for a Statistician to join our Data Science Unit and work on an exciting mental health research study.Overview of Duties:The African Health Research Institute (AHRI) has an exciting opportunity for a Statistician to join our Data Science Unit and work on an exciting mental health research study. The Statistician will be responsible for the creation of a linked dataset, and its statistical analysis with a focus on understanding longitudinal predictors of mental health outcomes among a large sample of adolescents. They will take on the role of study statistician on this project, and work closely with the study PI, and other members of AHRIxe2x80x99s Data Science Unit. In addition, the Statistician will assist with providing statistical support to the research team, including statistical input into scientific manuscripts.The post holder will be a member of AHRIxe2x80x99s Data Science Unit and mental health team, and will join a group of statisticians, data managers and other data scientists collaborating in the conduct and promotion of high-quality medical research, as well as a growing adolescent mental health science team.The Statistician III will be based at either the Somkhele or Durban site.Overview of duties

  • To take the role of study statistician for the research project.
  • To prepare study-specific statistical analysis plans, in consultation with the project investigators and senior Data Science Unit statisticians.
  • To create relevant datasets and perform statistical analysis of project data.
  • To - where relevant - provide statistical input into study database design, engage in data validation and quality control, or other data management activities.
  • To contribute to the preparation of scientific reports and publications.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in biostatistics, statistics, or another relevant data science-focused degree, or public health or epidemiology degree with strong biostatistics component.
Minimum Experience
  • 5 years' practical experience of working as an applied statistician in a health field.
  • Experience doing analyses of large and complex longitudinal datasets.
  • Excellent knowledge of a statistical software package (e.g., R, Stata or SAS)
  • Track record of contributing to peer-reviewed grant applications and scientific publications.
  • Experience of data management of epidemiological studies or randomised trials is desirable.
Skills Required
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Accuracy and precision.
  • High computer literacy.
  • Report writing.
  • Must be able to work under pressure.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases
  • Underpinning knowledge of epidemiology, cohort studies, intervention trials, and a range of advanced statistical techniques.
