Job Description


The Tax Manager manages the Tax Governance Framework by developing, implementing and maintaining, tax risk policy, tax risks and controls, and processes for the Group. Ensuring that the Group companies comply with tax laws (and regulations) relating to Life and Non-Life for Insurance companies and Investment Holding Companies and management of internal and external stakeholders. The Senior Manager reports to the Head of Finance.Key Responsibilities

  • Managing tax risk by driving the implementation of tax strategy, efficient tax controls and remediation processes.
  • Managing tax compliance for the Group (Income tax, VAT, Dividends Withholding Taxes and FATCA tax returns and payments to SARS).
  • Effectively manage SARS disputes.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities for tax savings.
  • Providing (or through consulting) provide technical tax advice for day-to-day business operation and corporate finance / mergers and acquisition transactions to ensure that they are implemented in the most tax efficient manner.
  • Ensure efficient handling and resolution of audit queries.
  • Managing tax reporting for IFRS17 purposes (deferred tax calculations) within the Group.
  • Managing the accounting of all taxes (proper ledger reconciliations).
  • Managing timeous tax calculation preparations; monthly, quarterly, annual, and budgeting reporting.
  • Identifying and implementing (or supporting implementation of) and tax process efficiencies using technology.
  • Providing tax training to internal stakeholders to ensure tax compliance with new and current tax legislation.
  • Management of external stakeholders (such as National Treasury, SARS, Industry bodies etc.) in contributing to the formulation of national tax policy and ensuring that the Group's interests are advocated, protected, and advanced.
  • Public officer at SARS for Hollard Group entities.
  • Sound business process and internal systems tax related knowledge.
  • Responsible for putting together tax process and compliance guidelines and quality standards and enforcing them throughout the Group.
  • Responsible for identifying Operational Tax Risks and providing input into and maintaining Tax Risk Logs, dashboards and developing risk mitigation strategies.
Stakeholder Relationships
  • In addition to strong relationships with colleagues in Hollard Group, drive Cross-Functional and Group Collaboration.
  • Build Relationships with industry members on industry related tax compliance workgroups and subcommittees e.g. SAIA, SAIA, SARS.
Tax Advisory
  • Provide opinions and motivations to justify tax positions taken by the Group.
  • Review and submit tax returns, tax objections and appeals and alternate dispute resolution cases to the Revenue Authority, on behalf of the Group.
  • Provide advice and recommendations to the Group on the implementation of new tax processes and tax controls, new products, administration platforms and systems.
  • Prepare Voluntary Disclosure submissions and requests for penalty remission to SARS.
  • Seek opportunities to minimise tax payments and identify tax risk mitigation strategies for the Group.
  • Provide technical support to business on customer tax-related (e.g. PAYE, IT3a/b, FATCA Statutory Submissions) queries of a legislative nature escalated by Client Servicing Areas, the internal or external, or sales advisor and brokers, as and when necessary.
