Job Description


To provide diverse technical support on basic mechanical engineering tasks, designs and planning requirements of eThekwini Electricity.
Key Responsibility Areas

  • Providing design, draughting and technical services for optimum utilisation and development of mechanical systems.
  • Exploring new and improving on methods, techniques, materials equipment and sources of supply.
  • Ensuring the correct documentation of incoming work, maintain adequate stocks of consumable materials, attend to correspondence etc.
  • Determining job priorities of in-coming work in the mechanical workshop branch, distribute work to the respective superintendent.
  • Undertaking basic mechanical engineering design work.
  • Travelling to work site to record measurements and sketches.
  • Reporting daily to the manager.
  • Maintaining close liaison with the electricity units managers, customers, consultants, contractors and workshops superintendents.
  • Planning and supervision of basic projects initiated and undertaken in the mechanical workshops branch.
  • Inspecting outside purchases with contractual specifications for compliance.
  • Preparing detailed basic quotations.
  • Training staff, including trainee technicians, seconded to the mechanical workshop branch.
  • Liaising with other branches, units, outside companies and clients for procurement of work and basic technical matters.
  • Ensuring the availability of specialist vehicles, equipment and manpower for joint projects.
  • Selecting, specifying and timeous procurement of equipment and materials for selected projects/jobs.
  • Assisting in controlling of all costs for the work carried out by the mechanical workshops branch.
  • Assisting with the supervision, implementation and operation of manpower planning.

Essential Requirements
  • National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Mechanical Engineering recognized by the Council of Higher Education
  • Registered as a Candidate Technician with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) within 3 months of employment
  • Valid motor vehicle driving license.
  • 1 year relevant post qualification experience.
