As a Technician Superintendent(Electrical, Control & Instrumentation), you will take on the responsibility of managing and leading a team of electrical and instrumentation personnel in providing dedicated technical and operational systems support to the engineering, mining and process departments.

Thungela Resources [Thungela means "to ignite" in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.
You will be responsible of ensuring that all systems are maintained to ensure safe operation and optimised so that the capacity to the production is maximised, and targets are met. This includes overseeing the maintenance and repair of all electrical equipment and machines, control and instrumentation equipment, and process control networks to ensure availability for the operations according to set target.
More of your responsibilities will include:
Conducting regular inspections on equipment to ensure that Thungela reliability targets are met.
Display managerial skill with a high degree of competence in electrical and instrumentation used in underground coal mining, and associated infrastructure.
Perform standby duties and work overtime work as determined by operational requirements
Maintain safe work practices and a safe working environment by ensuring that legal requirements and group working standards and policies related to electrical, electrical, control and instrumentation engineering are implemented and followed on the Operations and Projects
Conduct equipment failure analysis, root cause analysis, best practice and repair strategies to ensure optimal use and quality of electrical, control and instrumentation services as well as the reporting thereof on a regular basis.
Directly responsible for effective project management of electrical, control and instrumentation engineering projects ensuring best practice
Directly responsible for equipment inspections on electrical, control and instrumentation equipment received from OEM / repairers / suppliers to ensure compliance with required standards.
Represent their respective operation at all Thungela electrical, control and instrumentation forums and stakeholder meetings with the different operations
This role is in the Engineering Department at a Band 6 level reporting to the Section Engineer, with a team of Technicians, Mechanicians and Electricians as direct reports
Qualifications
Technical Electrical Qualification: Minimum N6
Driver's License
Valid Certificate of Fitness
AA Plc Safety Course: A3
Experience
Minimum of 5 years' experience as Senior technician / Technician/ General Engineering Supervisor/ Superintendent within the coal mining industry
In-depth electrical engineering experience within the coal mining industry
Underground and opencast electrical experience crucial
An in-depth knowledge of applicable SCADA systems.
Advanced computer literacy: MS Office, SCADA and PLC software
Additional Information
Knowledge of Relevant Legislation including (Mine Health and Safety Act/ Minerals and Energy Act/Environmental Legislation)
An in-depth knowledge of technical engineering aspects such as outside equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and South Africa Bureau of Standards (SABS)
A good working knowledge and understanding of machinery and equipment used in the Mining Industry
Aware of best practices and new technologies relating to Engineering Principles and Processes
