SUMMARY:
R & D Specialist (Engineering Technology)POSITION INFO:An international supplier of energy equipment based in Germiston is looking for Technology Development Specialist who will be responsible for research & development, of enhanced products that are innovative, of the highest quality, electrically and mechanically soundRESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Research and Development:
  • Identify market needs, develop, manage and implement the Divisions Technology Roadmap for existing and future products.
  • Monitor industry trends and competitor activities to identify opportunities and determine and execute improved technologies used by Suppliers, Competitors, and Customers
  • Manage R&D budget and resources efficiently
  • Identify and implement innovative design solutions to enhance high voltage products Participate in research and development activities to drive continuous improvement.
  • Identify and evaluate alternative for raw material and components Suppliers, both within South Africa and internationally, to optimize cost and quality.
  • Material choices, tolerance analysis, product cost price effectiveness, technical interaction with suppliers to enable manufactured component designs: technical reviews, technology choice.
  • Plan and execute development testing and type testing in accordance with the development plan for existing and future products.
  • Conduct design reviews for designs done by the
Department and products developed by ACTOM technology partners. * Provide technical support to the Proposals, Contracts, Operations and Services Departments.
  • Provide input on the Design and Development monthly progress report for the ACTOM HVE review meeting
  • Ensure compliance of products to international and national standards as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

  • Maintain and develop relationships with principles and key suppliers (i.e. while the focus would be on a technical level, the role requires commercial and contractual acumen).
  • Ensure that relevant product manuals, ordering schedules and product structures (codification structures) are up to date for existing and new products.
  • Ensure, through the Engineering Department, that the various product options exist and are available on the ERP system (Syspro) for the Proposals Department
  • Smart Products - AI/IOT Implementation:
  • Develop and implement condition monitoring/smart devices for High Voltage Equipment
  • Ensure seamless integration of smart devices onto the products.
  • Contribute to user requirement analysis and/or well-articulated proposals through demonstration of understanding and interpretation of client requirements.
  • Undertake software design and development for aspects within smart systems, robotics, and software applications.
  • Testing and Validation:
  • Conduct development & type testing and validation of the designs systems to ensure they meet relevant specifications and safety standards.
  • Perform simulations and analyse results to optimize system & design performance.
  • Project Management:
  • Ensure the R&D project are managed according to time, quality, and cost constraints.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion and adherence to budget constraints.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams externally & internally, including electrical & mechanical engineers, software developers, and project managers.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Compliance and Safety:
  • Internal & Customer Support:
  • Ensure all electronic and automation systems comply with industry standards and regulations.
  • Implement safety protocols and conduct risk assessments for high voltage engineering designs.
  • Document and report safety incidents and propose corrective actions.
  • Assists mechanical/electrical engineers with special projects, design reviews. Assists with the development and testing of machinery and equipment under direction of the engineering department.
  • Provide technical support and training to customers and end-users.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical proposals, presentations, and documentation.
  • Address customer enquiries and provide solutions to technical challenges.
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g. Production, Marketing) to ensure successful implementation of new products.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Honours/masters degree in electrical/Electronic or Computer Science.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.)
A minimum of 10 years in a senior engineering design/technology development role within the Electricity Supply or Electronics Engineering Industry.Familiarity with relevant tools, software, and emerging technologies in the industry.Detailed knowledge and understanding of the relevant IEC, ANSI, NRS, SANS, and other relevant industry technology standards.Good understanding of transmission and distribution networks, insulation co-ordination, protection and control systems.Participant and or member in good standing of Professional Industry bodies (IEC Committees, SAIEE, IEEE, Cigre) * If interested and you meet the requirements kindly submit your application to or
